At Hatch Park, our woodlands are one of the estate's greatest natural assets. Covering approximately 215 hectares, they include ancient and semi-natural woodland, traditional sweet chestnut coppice, mature broadleaved and mixed woodland and veteran trees that have shaped the landscape for centuries. These historic woods are managed with a long-term vision that balances conservation, heritage, sustainable timber production and public enjoyment.

 

Our approach is one of active woodland management. By carefully thinning trees, restoring traditional coppice, managing veteran trees, controlling deer and grey squirrels, and maintaining woodland rides and open spaces, we create a diverse woodland structure that supports wildlife while ensuring the woods remain healthy and resilient for future generations.

 

The estate is home to an exceptional range of wildlife, including propriety species such as the rare hazel dormouse. Some of our ancient hornbeam pollards are believed to be among the finest in Britain, with internationally significant lichen communities found nowhere else in south-east England. Protecting and enhancing these habitats is at the heart of every management decision we make.

 

Sustainability also means preparing our woodlands for the future. We monitor tree health, respond proactively to emerging pests and diseases, retain standing and fallen deadwood for biodiversity, and promote natural regeneration to create resilient, climate-ready woodlands. Timber harvested from the estate is produced responsibly as part of a continuous cycle of woodland stewardship.
